“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:2-3).
Jesus was about to die and that meant that His disciples were facing the most devastating crisis of their lives. They had left their past attachments to follow Jesus and now He would be crucified. He knew that His Resurrection would follow three days later but His disciples didn’t anticipate that.
Jesus, to comfort them, pointed to the future because He could see beyond the Cross. He could see the blessing that would come after His death and Resurrection. We are like the disciples. We often are near-sighted and can only see the impending crisis. Jesus already has the problem under control and holds our tomorrows in His hands.
The hope Jesus gave His disciples is our hope, too. We may face difficulties now, but the destiny of every believer is secure. Where we are going is never in doubt. We’re going to heaven to be with Jesus forever. Though many believers have gone before us there is room for all of us. Heaven is large enough to accommodate everyone who will ever believe in Jesus. As Jesus said, “My Father’s house has many rooms.”
The next few hours would prove to be difficult for His disciples. They were about to lose their best Friend and their Savior. That, though, wasn’t to be the last chapter of their lives. He promised them that He would come back for them and that they would be with Him forever. When we face our difficult moments this promise is for us, too. He’s coming back and we’ll be with Him forever.
