“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14).
Every believer longs for Jesus to come and end the evil we see around us. We eagerly anticipate the day that will end terrorism, pain and suffering. The Bible promises that there will be an end of this age and the beginning of an age of righteousness. Jesus had just listed the events that will not mark the end of the age.
“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come” (Matthew 24:6).
He then explained what will mark the end of this age. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Many events that take place are out of our control—earthquakes, weather and even war make us realize how helpless we can be.
One thing is in our hands, though, and it is the most important thing. We can reach the world with the gospel of the kingdom—the good news that Jesus is King of kings and He loves us enough that He died for us. When we have done that the end will come.
Jesus gave us our assignment before He returned to heaven. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20).
This passage is a promise that the Great Commission will be completely fulfilled. Jesus told us to reach all nations and that’s why we are doing it. When the nations have heard the good news the end will come and a new day will begin. The glories of that day will be beyond our wildest imaginations.
