I was a pastor who measured my success as many do—by the size of my congregation. After all, I wanted to show that God approved of my ministry. I was striving with all my strength to maintain God’s approval and secure His love for me. However, I came to realize that my best effort wasn’t good enough to impress God. Then I had an encounter with grace. I discovered that God didn’t love me for my performance. He just loved me. It was as though He said to me, “If you never preach another good sermon if you never have another person saved under your ministry, I will love you just as much!” God’s love for me isn’t based on my performance. Do I want to perform well? Absolutely! I work hard because of what God has done for me, but my relationship with God is not on the line. He loves me because of who He is! That pulled the pin on the grace grenade for me.

Titus 3:4-5 NIV

4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,
