I have served as a pastor most of my adult life. I faced the challenges of mortgage payments, parking lot attendants, and unpaid staff. Working with mostly volunteers there was always the temptation to use guilt and manipulation to get things done. At the same time, I was learning to depend on God’s grace and undeserved favor in my own life and ministry. I knew the strength of the church was in the power of God’s love and grace, not my best efforts. I began to realize that I couldn’t trust God’s grace for myself and use religious rules to coerce others. When I pulled the pin on grace I began teaching others to trust God’s grace, too. That produces healthy Christians. Grace works for me and it will work for anyone.
1 Corinthians 16:23 NIV
