“For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26).
It is good for us to forget some things. If we don’t forget our failures we can be bound to our pasts just as surely as having our feet chained to our limitations from yesterday. If we don’t move past our victories we may miss the opportunities that await us in the future.
Yet, there are some things we never want to forget. Chief among those things is the sacrifice Jesus made so we can be free. We never want to forget the death of Christ because His death provided life for us. That’s why we celebrate the Lord’s Supper as part of our worship.
Paul added a special note to our understanding of Communion. When we eat the bread and drink the cup together we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. The word used for “proclaim” is interesting. It means to proclaim something publicly and could easily be translated “preach.” When we celebrate Communion we are preaching to the world that the death of Christ is our means of moving from death to life. We never want to forget the power of the Cross!
