“For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life” (2 Corinthians 5:4).
When I read these words I confess that I silently think, “We do groan.” Life can be tough and the struggle is real. Heaven will not only be wonderful but we will be free of the burdensome load we carry here. Our physical limitations will be exchanged for a spiritual body that can’t be tempted and won’t grow tired or hungry.
There will be a day when the mortal will be swallowed up by life. When my father passed away I realized that what we saw in that hospital room wasn’t everything that was happening. We watched his physical body wear away and finally give up. What we couldn’t see with our natural eyes was the presence of Jesus and Dad’s spirit finally freed from suffering and painful limitations.
God has a great plan for our futures. We will be clothed with a heavenly dwelling. Our mortality will be swallowed up by life. We’re not there yet but we will be as certainly as God is in heaven. In the meantime on our toughest days we can dream!
