“This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth” (Titus 1:13-14).
One of the greatest obstacles to a healthy relationship with Christ is the “merely human commands” that clutter up the landscape. Jesus came to set us free so we could live a life empowered by the Holy Spirit. That is why He died in our place for our sins. Religion has a way of placing a culture of human rules in the mix that makes it seem that just believing in Jesus isn’t enough.
Jesus Himself said, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them” (Luke 11:46).
Jesus offered the same solution Paul prescribed for Timothy. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Be sound in the faith and don’t be sidetracked by “merely human commands.” Trust Jesus and don’t be bound by religion. Faith in what He has done for us is what God desires.
