“It [love] always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:7-8).
There has to be a source for this kind of love that never fails. That source is God. We wouldn’t know what love is if God had not demonstrated it for us. It was God’s love that caused Him to send His Son to be our Savior. It is God’s love that sustains us every day. It will be God’s love that will still shine on us in eternity. God’s love protects us.
The expression “It always protects” literally means that love seals and covers. It is like sealing a container so that some things can’t get in and some things can’t get out. God covers us with that kind of love. There are things God knows about us that He will never let anyone else know and there are things others say and think about us that God will never let into our minds.
Love means that even though we are vulnerable we are kept safe by God’s love because He covers us. Loving others that way means that they are safe because we protect them. We seal some things in and keep some thoughts out. There is a song that says, “What the world needs now is love sweet love.” It is true. What is also true is that the source of that love is a loving God. Only through Him can we pass that kind of love to others. Love like that will never fail.
