“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15).
There are so many wrong views of God, the Father, in our world. Some people think that He is uncaring and uninvolved in our circumstances. Others disregard Him completely. For too many people God is the angry Punisher who is just waiting for the opportunity get even with us for all the wrongs we’ve done. Jesus shows us what God is really like.
If we wonder how God feels about sinners, Jesus shows us. In the Parable of the Prodigal Son He shows us that the Father is waiting patiently for wandering children to come to their senses and come home. If we wonder how God feels about people suffering from affliction, Jesus shows us that God loves them and is willing to touch lepers and deliver the demonized. If I wonder how God feels about children, I read about Jesus bouncing them on His knee.
William Barclay wrote that one reason Jesus came into the world is to show us what God is like. Jesus demonstrated God’s immeasurable love for us by dying in our place. God is invisible but because of Jesus we aren’t left in the dark. Jesus is the “image of the invisible God.” God is loving, kind and compassionate. He has done everything necessary to protect us from ourselves and our craziness. Who wouldn’t want to trust a God like that?
