The Christian message focuses completely on Jesus Christ. If you read the New Testament, it is clear that God the Father loves His one and only Son, Jesus. John 3:16, may be the most loved verse in the Bible. It makes clear how God views His Son. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
God has shown us the one way we can reach His heart. We can only come to Him through faith in Jesus. He has wrapped up His entire message to us in His Son. Jesus Himself said, “If you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father.” It is amazing for us to realize the supernatural love God has for His Son. There aren’t many paths to the Father. There is only one! It is through His Son, Jesus.
A clear picture of this is the story from the life of the very wealthy English Baron Fitzgerald. He had only one child, a son, who understandably was the apple of his eye, the center of his affections, an only child, the focus of this little family’s attention. In the son’s early teens the mother died, leaving only Fitzgerald and his son. Then, in his late teens, the son died.
The father used his increasing wealth to accumulate a vast art collection. At his death, his will revealed very specific instructions as to the distribution of his wealth. He directed that an auction would be held to dispose of his collection, valued in millions of pounds sterling. Because of the collection, art collectors and museum curators gathered in large numbers.
The auction began with a reading from the will by the lawyer. The first painting to be auctioned was the painting of “my beloved son.” The poor-quality painting didn’t receive any bidders…except one! The only bidder was the old servant who had known the son and loved him and served him and for sentimental reasons offered the only bid. For less than an English pound he bought the painting.
The auctioneer stopped the bidding and asked the attorney to read again from the will. The crowd was hushed, it was quite unusual, and the attorney read from the Fitzgerald will: “Whoever buys the painting of my son gets all my art collection. The auction is over!”
That story is a picture of how much God loves His Son, Jesus. Those who choose Jesus get everything! All that God has, His entire inheritance is available to everyone who believes in Jesus! As John 3:16 says, “whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
