“For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:19-20).
Conflict isn’t pleasant. Whether it’s conflict with a person or the struggle for peace within ourselves—shown by anxiety and worry—conflict takes a toll on all of us. If we were to ask anyone what he or she really desires high on the list for most of us would be the one word—peace.
That desire is even greater when we realize that we are not at peace with God. We have offended Him by our behavior. That is clear by just one phrase from Scripture. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The helplessness of knowing that there is nothing we can do to measure up to God’s requirements is a heavy burden to carry.
There is hope for us, though. God has made peace with us through the blood of His Son, Jesus. That means that we can believe in Jesus and rest in what He has done for us. Nothing more is required of us than faith in His Son. We are reconciled with God because Jesus died for us and rose again to give us eternal life. That good news will help any of us sleep peacefully at night and live with confidence all day long.
