“Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment’ ” (Matthew 8:13).
There are two remarkable characteristics about this story. First, it’s a miracle performed for a centurion—a Gentile and a soldier of the occupation. Second, Jesus wasn’t present when the miracle took place. He never went to the centurion’s house. Another observation would be the comment Jesus made. “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”
The request of the centurion exhibited faith because he knew to approach Jesus with his request. Often even the best of us try other alternatives before finally coming to Jesus with our requests. It may not be that we don’t trust Him but it could be that we don’t want to bother Him. The longer we walk with Jesus and understand Him the more we realize that He doesn’t mind being bothered.
A lady once asked G. Campbell Morgan, “Do you think we ought to pray about even the little things in life?” Dr. Morgan, in his typically understated British manner, replied, “Madam, can you think of anything in your life that is big to God?”
The servant was healed when Jesus spoke even though Jesus wasn’t there. There is no limit to His power. Distance is not a problem for Him. When He speaks the answer comes. Don’t think limited thoughts about Jesus. He’s more able than we can possibly imagine Him to be. He will answer anyone who is willing to come to Him.
