“ ‘Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will’ ” (Mark 14:36).
Jesus was not a madman and He was not suicidal. In His humanity, He knew what was coming and He would have felt the same emotion we would have felt. Who would possibly face torture and crucifixion nonchalantly?
Yet, these are the words that saved the lives of all of us who would believe in Him. “Not what I will, but what you will.” God knew that the death of His Son, Jesus, was the only sacrifice that could atone for our sins. Jesus, in His humanity, knew what the next few days would entail but He submitted to His Father’s will.
This moment when His humanity drew back at the price of our salvation, Jesus had the courage to say “Yes” to His Father. We know the end of the story. Jesus was raised from the dead in a triumphant moment of Resurrection. It is a lesson for all of us who believe in Him. Commitment to God’s will leads to victory that is unimaginable. It is His Spirit in us that enables us to pray as Jesus did, “not what I will, but what You will.”
