“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance” (2 Thessalonians 3:5).
How can God really love me? That question has occurred to most of us. When we doubt His love it leads to frustrating attempts to do enough to change God’s mind so He can love us again. When we are working hard at earning God’s love this prayer comes to our rescue. One of the blessings of serving the Lord is that He continually directs our hearts into God’s love.
As difficult as it is to comprehend, God’s love for us is constant. He loved us while we were sinners and He loves us now. God’s love for us isn’t based on who we are or what we do; it’s His nature. The Bible tells us that God is love.
It’s one thing to be loved, it’s another thing entirely to be able to comprehend it. Faith in Christ means that our hearts are able to receive God’s love. Consequently, we are enabled to persevere in any situation. Jesus knew that His Father loved Him. That helped Him overcome every difficulty He faced.
The key to knowing how much we are loved by God is believing in Jesus. He is the One who can direct us into the inexhaustible love of God. When we know God loves us we, like Jesus, can endure anything.
