“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).
In the process of growing up spiritually we often feel that we have a long way to go before we reach our goal. We know what Jesus was like and we recognize the gap between Him and us. That can be frustrating.
This Scripture is a comfort to all of us. Our spiritual life didn’t begin with our own effort and performance. God began it when we believed in Jesus. Even more assuring, God who began His work in us will carry it on to completion. We can have absolute confidence that God will finish what He started.
We are all somewhere between where we began and where we will someday be. We don’t have to struggle on our own to get where we’re going. We have God with us and He promises to guarantee that we will make it.
For those who ask themselves the troubling question, “Will I make it?” the answer is a resounding “Yes.” The one who began our spiritual life by forgiving our sins and providing a fresh start hasn’t abandoned us there. He is committed to us for the long haul. He will never stop working for us and in us until we become the individuals He knew from the start that we could be.
