“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
God has made many promises that are designed to meet our needs and help us through life. Those promises are fulfilled in Christ. We cannot experience the promises of God apart from Christ. “Yes” implies that questions have been asked, Questions like, “Will God do these things for me?” In Christ the answer to all the questions related to all the promises is “Yes.” Had Jesus never come we would have doubted the promises. They seem too good to be true. “Can I make it?” I wouldn’t have known. “Can I be happy?” I couldn’t be sure. But, in Christ, the answer to every question about our provision is “Yes!”
God’s promises are received as we say “Amen.” “And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God.” The Hebrew root of the word “amen” is “aman.” It means “certainty,” “firmness,” “reliability.” It is an Old Testament word for faith. It is saying, “I believe because the thing I trust is reliable and sure.” Our saying “Amen” is our expressing confidence in the faithfulness of God and the certainty of His promises.
It is not enough for God to give the promise. It is not enough for Jesus to answer our questions and say, “God says ‘Yes.’ ” The benefits are not received until we say “Amen.” I believe. I will trust God. When we see a promise and say “Amen” we are saying that God can be trusted to keep His word.
