“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7).
We know that many different people have a variety of different personalities. Everything we know about Timothy indicates that he was timid. We know that from Paul’s letters to him. There are many individuals just like him. Some people are aggressive. It would be fair to say that Paul was an A-type personality. Paul’s advice to Timothy shows that God calls people with different types of personalities into His service.
Some people God uses are shy and retiring. The good news for those who are like that is that God can still use them. God can give them the boldness they need. The bottom line is that we aren’t just dependent on the strength of our personalities, but we are equipped with what we need in order to serve Him. While we may be naturally withdrawn and shy God can empower us to be bold.
From time to time we need a supernatural supply of power, love, and self-discipline. God equips us with what we need. We may meet people we find hard to love. God gives us enough love to cover them. We may feel weak and unqualified but God gives us power. We may feel unable to handle ourselves at times but God gives us self-control. Don’t give up on yourself. God will supply everything we need. When we say “yes” to Jesus, God equips us for success—no matter what our history or personalities may be.
