“Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.” (Hebrews 3:1).
There are many things that demand our attention. We live in a world that is filled with distractions. The problem is that we tend to focus on the things we see directly in front of us. My wife, Gwen, jokes me about asking “What’s for dinner?” while I’m still eating breakfast. It’s difficult to drift off to sleep without thinking of the news we just saw on television. Most of the men I know are like me. We spend a good portion of our time thinking about our favorite sports teams.
With all those distractions it’s easy to lose sight of Jesus. It isn’t reasonable to think that we will never consider those other parts of our lives but it is reasonable to make sure that we don’t lose sight of Jesus. The apostle Peter showed what can happen when we lose our focus as he walked on the water toward Jesus. While he looked at Jesus he kept walking. When he was distracted by the wind and the waves he started to sink.
Yet, practically, how do we fix our eyes on Him? This Scripture tells us the proper object of our focus. We fix our eyes on Jesus as God’s Apostle, sent to communicate to us from the heart of God. He is the One who enables us to understand what God wants us to know. He was sent from heaven to save us.
We fix our eyes on Jesus as our High Priest. He is the One who represents us at the throne of God. The writer of Hebrews wrote later in this letter, “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25).
In the midst of the many things that call for our attention don’t ever lose sight of Jesus. He is the One God sent to save us and He is the One who represents us in the presence of God. He is our security no matter what is happening around us.
