“We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:3).
The apostle John gives an insight into why he is writing this letter and what result he wants it to produce in those who read it. He makes it clear that he is talking about something he has experienced personally. He walked with Jesus, saw what Jesus did, and heard what Jesus taught. He witnessed the death and resurrection of Jesus. He is what we would call an “expert witness.”
He tells his story so we will take our place alongside others who believe in Jesus. He also explains that believing his testimony will bring us into fellowship with God Himself. Fellowship is a translation of the Greek word, “koinonia.” It refers to sharing and partnership. As we partner with other believers we are also partnering with God. It means that when we believe the good news about Jesus, we share a common goal with other believers and, indeed, embrace God’s ultimate purpose.
Partners stay in touch with each other and move with a common purpose. Believing what the apostle John proclaims from his own experience means that we are united with one another, are united with God and have the promise of a never-ending life in His presence as we pursue His purpose. We are connected with Him and our fellow believers eternally. John wrote this letter to help us see that happen.
