“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17b-3:19).
A statement in this Scripture is remarkable. How can we “know this love that surpasses knowledge?” Paul was showing us that no matter how much we know God loves us, we’ll never be able to wrap our minds around His infinite love.
That’s why He used the terms how “wide and long and high and deep.” The Greek Stoics used those words to describe the universe. Paul was saying to us, “Step outside and look at the immensity of this universe. That’s how much God loves you.” God’s love for us is literally beyond our ability to measure it.
When Paul prayed that we would be established in love he used a Greek work for the foundation of a building. No one can build a building beyond the size of its foundation or it will begin to crack and sink. Paul says that the more we know God loves us the greater the foundation of our lives will be and the larger will be the life we can build.
Don’t let anyone tell you God doesn’t love you. His love for you and me is beyond measurement.
